There are days and then there are DAYS!

This one fell into the DAYS category and it isn't over, yet! The day started on the golf course where instead of being paired with beginners, like I should be, I was paired with two ladies who just came back from playing the State Seniors Golf Tournament WHERE ONE OF THEM WON A CONSOLATION PRIZE! Hello......Can we say INTIMATION!!! On hole #1 I could not hit the ball for anything and when I did, it hit every tree on the hole. I wasn't even half way to the Par 4 hole green and I already had 4 strokes. I politely told the ladies that I was going to slip off by myself and play the back nine. Well, I couldn't even do any better there where there was no one to intimidate me. I quit and went shopping.

Did my day improve there? Not one bit. Nothing looked right...nothing fit right! I have gained 5 pounds and I am not a happy camper. So....without buying anything (that's a good thing), I headed for the gym to work out. I drove around the block 3 times without turning into the parking lot. Finally, I decided just to take my butt home and stay there

Did my day improve there? Not one bit. I broke a tooth chewing on a Jelly Belly!!! Jelly Belly's are not HARD! My dentist's office is already closed and they do not open again until Monday. I guess that is God's way of telling me to STOP EATING JELLY BELLY'S!!OK...I got the message! AARGH!!!!

Mother's Day

As I left church this morning, I was handed a Mother's Day gift. It was a beautiful pen and bookmark. I guess that all women are considered mothers. I am not a mother, but it was assumed that I was. That's OK with me. I don't mind at all, but I wonder if those women who wanted to be mothers, but for some reason were not granted that joy were offended or hurt by being handed the gift. It could have reminded them of the sorrows they felt for not being a mother.

I have a wonderful 80 year old mother whom I should have been with today. Last night I attended an engagement party here in my town, which is 4 hours away from where my mother lives. It was my intention to get up early this morning and drive the 4 hours to surprise my mom at church. That didn't happen for whatever lame reason! No reason is good enough for my shortcomings on this Mother's Day. I know that future Mother's Days with my mother are numbered and I should have gotten my butt out of bed and hit the road at 6 A.M.

Even though I am not a mother, there is always one very special person who calls to wish me a Happy Mother's Day. If I had a daughter , I would want her to be just like Denise!!!

Woo Hoo...What a Ride!

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well -preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming, "WOO HOO what a ride!" I cannot take credit for this quote, but I like it a lot! I wish I had said it, but since I didn't I am going to borrow it and continue to live exactly this way.

To make this ride a little smoother, I hope, I took the plunge yesterday and had a CK (conductive kerotoplasty) on one eye. It's a relatively new procedure for aging eyes that will permit me to get rid of the glasses!!! Even yesterday after the procedure, I was reading things that I couldn't read without glasses just a few minutes before. There was no pain involved, but today has been quite uncomfortable at times. My vision is blurred, but will continue to improve over the next couple of weeks...I hope!! None of this stopped me from going to my golf lesson yesterday afternoon or playing 18 holes today before going to a meeting concerning a bridal shower for which I am a hostess. I had trouble seeing the golf ball today, but the ladies with whom I was playing were very accommodating. I shot a 114, which, for me, is not a bad score. I've done worse!!!

Whew! What a whirlwind!

I have just returned from a whirlwind trip to visit my parents in North Louisiana. Today is my dad's 83rd birthday and on Wednesday of last week I took him for a heart cath. His shortness of breath is not from a blockage! Could it be nothing more than AGE! I think so, but it is hard for him to accept. Since he and Mom have been attacked by age-related infirmities, I have tried to keep their yard manicured and plant all the spring flowers. Mom loves her flowers and he loves his garden, so last week I did both! I have become quite the farmer and , yes, I can run a tiller! I work so hard while I am there that I can hardly move at night, but when I leave, the place is beautiful. Did I mention that we are talking acres here.....not a tiny little suburban yard? It takes me 3 hours to do all the mowing and that's on a riding lawn mower!!!

It didn't take me long to get back in MY world today....that would be losing golf balls on the golf course. Do golf balls have magnets in them that are attracted to water? I think mine do! Hitting a ball in the water automatically adds 3 strokes to the hole and that's only if I don't hit it in the water a second time!!! AARGH!

Tomorrow, I am very much looking forward to getting rid of my glasses by having Conductive Keratotomy on one eye. I fully expect to be on the golf course for my golf lesson at 4:30 after having the 3-5 minute procedure at 10:30 A.M. I may be expecting too much!!!

Shameful Sunday!

Today I did something that I will never do again. To set the scene, it was 49 degrees and absolutely postcard perfect in Southeast Texas this morning. The temperature was predicted to rise to the 70's only. For this time of year that is just unheard of. By now, we are usually seeing temps into the 90's with high humidities. I made the decision to bypass church today and go straight to the golf course. I justified it to myself that by going early, while EVERYONE else is in church, the course will not be crowded and I can get in a good round of 18 with a decent score and turn in the card to be used on my next handicap adjustment. WRONG! Well, I was right about the course being sparsely occupied, but I felt guilty and played horribly the entire 18 holes. Back when I was spiritually dormant, I would have done this in a heartbeat and felt no pangs of guilt. I am happy to say that those days are gone. I told a fellow player whose ball landed in my fairway that I was playing badly as well and I felt guilty because I should be in church. He told me a joke about the preacher who made a hole-in-one, but couldn't tell anyone about it because he did it on a Sunday!!!!

Homepage

Homepage

This is a webpage I designed in a 2 day workshop while I was still teaching. The info is out of date and some of the links don't work, but I have NO CLUE how to get to it to change it. Ooops! I must have missed that part of the workshop!

Still Waiting for Today's Blessing......

Rather than just be negative, which I am not prone to do, let's just say the weather today was absolutely divine! I watched some of the Member/Guest golf tournament put on by the Mens' Golf Association at my local course. It was even a little chilly for Southeast Texas!

Now.....forgive me for this one tad of negativism! On my way to get in my workout today, I stopped in for just an exterior car wash. Before they run the car through, someone does a visual check all around the car to check for any damage and marks it down. I was asked to look at it and initial it. Fine....no problem! Imagine my surprise when I got in my car to leave and there was a big half moon crack running down my windshield. They refused to take responsibility because they say only cloth touches the car. I did not go back and look, but I believe they have a huge blower with wheels that runs over the car's surface. I realize there had to be a weakness in the windshield for that to happen, but I was still furious! OK..I'm done ranting and I will not go back there.Never made it to the gym.

Yesterday, I saw the movie, A Lot Like Love. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was light and can I just say that Ashton Kutcher is just adorable? It had no guns, no car chases, no fights, very little profanity, and some nudity. Hey, it was Ashton Kutcher, so I am not complaining!

Recent travels

Just two weeks ago I spent an awesome day at Augusta National Golf Club watching the Par 3 tournament at the Master's Golf Tournament, the most prestigious tournament in golf. It was made much better because I was there with my dear friend, Denise, and her husband, Paul. Prior to going to their home on Tuesday before our golf outing on Wednesday, I spent a night at Hilton Head with my friends, Dianne and Jim, who actually live in Utah, but just happened to be in a time share on Hilton Head Island that week. A coincidence? I think not. I do not believe in coincidences. Before going there I spent a day in Savannah just loving every minute of their wonderful Old South hospitality and history. I am a true Confederate! My great-grandfather had his finger shot while carrying the Confederate flag during the Civil War. He got gangrene in the finger and put his hands behind his back and pulled it off. He continued to carry the flag!!

First ever blog!

April 22, 2005

I have been reading various blogs for awhile now and made the BOLD decision to do my own. Don't know why! My life is busy, but probably boring to most people....especially since I am retired. I am basically doing this for myself just to have a record of how I spend my time each day. Each day is a blessing and I should treat it as such by doing something constructive each day. If I am blogging each day, it will be more of an incentive to do something good each day...either for myself or for someone else.

Terrific Thursday

The day started on the golf course. Golf is absolutely kicking my butt! I thought I would get better after I retired and could play more........SooooooNOT TRUE! I played 9 holes with another beginner, Ardine, and shot a 52. Now that really isn't too bad of a score since my home course is a very hard course. I really felt like playing another 9, but opted out since my partner was quitting. I need to get some score cards turned in so my handicap can be updated. It stayed the same from last year because I spent one whole year without playing one hole of golf. It is a 34.5 U.S.G.A., but a 37 on my home course, Sunset Grove Country Club. See, I told you it was a hard course!!!

After I left the golf course, I decided I should go get a workout in at the Health and Wellness Center. Usually, golf takes enough out of me that a workout is unnecessary, but not this day! I was pumped. I got in a good workout.

After working out, I went to dinner at Guadalajara with my friends, Joy and Tim, after which we went to the local Community Playhouse to see the play, Meshuggah. It is one of the Nunsense series and it was absolutely hilarious. I laughed the whole time. A friend of mine from my teaching days was in the play, and I was fortunate enough that she left me a complementary ticket. Thanks, Michelle. You were awesome as a nun!!! We both know you wouldn't qualify as one in real life!!!!
